Mr. Van Steenis attended the University of California where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1996. He obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Regent University in Virginia in 1999. After receiving his J.D., Mr. Van Steenis obtained his L.L.M. degree in environmental and energy law from Tulane University in New Orleans in 2001.

Mr. Van Steenis was admitted to the Louisiana bar in 2000. He began his career defending hospitals and their staffs from medical malpractice claims, and related matters. In 2006, he then changed firms and began representing maritime interests along with his continued defense of healthcare clients, including skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, LTAC’s, and various types of other healthcare providers. Mr. Van Steenis moved to Houston in 2017, where he has continued his practice representing clients throughout Texas and Louisiana.

Mr. Van Steenis has been named a Super Lawyer for medical liability claims in Texas the last three years in a row. He was named as one of Houston’s top healthcare lawyers by Houstonia Magazine for 2021-2023, and a top medical malpractice defense attorney for 2022-2023. In 2024, he was rated by Super Lawyers in Texas for Medical Malpractice. He is also a Fellow of the Houston and Texas Bar Foundations. Only 1/3 of 1% of Texas Lawyers are invited to be a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.
